SCREEN and UPM Adhesive Materials Present Water-Based Inkjet Label Substrate Breakthrough at Labelexpo 2025 https://www.screeneurope.com/news/screen-upm-water-based-labelexpo-2025/ Wed, 10 Sep 2025 05:00:02 +0000 https://www.screeneurope.com/?p=30729 SCREEN Europe and UPM Adhesive Materials have partnered to develop specialised substrates for the Truepress LABEL 520AQ water-based digital label press, bringing high-speed, high-quality inkjet label printing to Labelexpo 2025.

Barcelona, Spain – SCREEN has partnered with UPM Adhesive Materials qualify various label substrates designed for use with SCREEN’s new conceptual Truepress LABEL 520AQ water-based digital inkjet press.

This collaboration was a crucial step in exploring the viability of water-based inkjet printing technology for the label market. As while this technology has a long history of proven success in the commercial printing sector, label converting has distinct requirements regarding prominent label and packaging substrates.

Initial testing has proven to be very successful, with this collaborative printing solution providing fast, immediate drying at full production speeds as fast as 100m/min on both paper and films, which will be exhibited to the market for the first time at Labelexpo 2025.

A Long History of Co-Innovation

UPM Adhesive Materials is one of the world’s leading suppliers of self-adhesive materials designers and suppliers, offering high-performance label materials, graphics solutions, and specialty tapes. It is also one the UPM Group’s fastest-growing global businesses, recognised for its commitment to innovation and customer service.

Through these shared values, SCREEN and UPM have a long history of collaboration extending over more than a decade, working together at the SCREEN’s Inkjet Innovation Centre (IIC) to test and refine substrates for SCREEN’s UV inkjet presses.

As SCREEN first began to explore applying its established water-based inkjet technology for labelling, UPM was uniquely positioned as the only substrate manufacturer also exploring solutions in this field, making them the ideal partner to support this new, experimental endeavour.

Specialised Label Substrates for Water-Based Inkjet Printing

For the Truepress LABEL 520AQ, SCREEN and UPM have optimised several of their substrates, including a water-based inkjet coated polypropylene (PP) and (BOPP) films with a Jet Matte paper substrate.

Polypropylene is one of the most widely used self-adhesive face stocks in the label industry, so vital to test its pigment-based water inks such as SCREEN’s Truepress SC+ inks. To ensure this vital label substrate is fully functional with water-based inkjet printing, UPM has developed a specialised topcoat that enhances ink adhesion. However, even with a specialised top-coating, effectively drying aqueous inks on films has traditionally been a challenge at high speeds, as the water can fail to settle on the hydrophobic surface. SCREEN’s Near-Infared (NIR) drying system resolves this issue, enabling effective drying on film substrates at production speeds of up to 100 metres per minute.

UPM has also refined the composition of a Biaxially-Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) film, another important label and packaging material, to further improve the interaction between water-based inks and the film’s surface. Similar to the tested PP film, the combination of this substrate with SCREEN’s advanced drying process resulted is high-quality output without slowing productivity or impacting label consistency.

For paper applications, UPM has developed a Jet Matte paper with an inkjet coating optimised for water-based inks to enable sharp text, crisp image density, and vibrant colours while maintaining the production speeds required for label converters using paper substrates. This further elevates the equipment’s substrate diversity, as highly formulated SCREEN inks enables printing directly unto readily available offset coated papers without pre-treatments or primers.

A Step Forward for Label Converters

Testing these two innovative technologies together across different proofs and production conditions has shown consistently high printing performance for both film and paper substrates. The combination of UPM’s specialised coatings and SCREEN’s drying technology achieved vivid, offset-quality results, regardless of desired ink coverage and density, while maintaining full label printing speed.

These results are an early indicator that these solutions can enable businesses in various label markets to improve throughput, efficient energy consumption, and lessen the equipment’s overall environmental footprint, while maintaining and, for various applications, even improving label printing quality and productivity.

Carlo Sammarco, SCREEN’s, was excited to showcase this technological collaboration potential impact on the label printing sector, saying, “Combining SCREEN’s extensive inkjet printing technologies and expertise within both the commercial and label printing sectors, with UPM’s constant innovations developing new and specialised substrates, together, we hope to successfully highlight a practical solution bringing the same exceptional high-speed, high-quality printing capabilities familiar to commercial printing, with a cost-effective, future-ready solution available to label converters.”

SCREEN and UPM Adhesive Materials at Labelexpo 2025

SCREEN and CGS ORIS Showcase CERTIFIED Colour Quality Control at Labelexpo 2025 https://www.screeneurope.com/news/screen-cgs-oris-labelexpo-2025/ Wed, 03 Sep 2025 09:59:49 +0000 https://www.screeneurope.com/?p=30580 SCREEN has collaborated with CGS ORIS to integrate their CERTIFIED quality control software into Truepress LABEL digital label printing solutions to enhance accurate, reliable, and documented colour consistency at Labelexpo Europe 2025.

Barcelona, Spain – SCREEN has extended its long-standing collaboration with CGS ORIS to integrate the company’s CERTIFIED colour quality control software with SCREEN’s Truepress LABEL technology.

Recently recognised as the first-ever UV inkjet solution to receive the Idealliance’s G7 Digital Press Certification for expanded colour reproduction, the press will now feature advanced monitoring capable verifying to label clients that its wide colour gamut consistently meets various international colour standards with fully documented data.

This new colour management workflow will be demonstrated live at Labelexpo 2025 on the SCREEN booth in Hall 5, Stand D55, in conjunction with the Truepress LABEL 350UV SAI S that will be operating continuously throughout the four-day event.

Long-Term Partners in Colour Management

CGS ORIS and SCREEN have worked together for many years on various digital colour management solutions integrated into SCREEN’s proprietary EQUIOS workflow software used in all Truepress LABEL technology, such as handling Colour Exchange Format (CxF) data to automate colour matching and control processes.

“Looking forward, out of all the various projects where our organisations could work together, we identified that quality control and colour consistency in label printing would have the greatest impact for converters,” said Bernd Rückert, CEO at CGS ORIS GmbH.

The latest product of this collaboration is the CERTIFIED system, designed to accurately profile the colour gamut of printing equipment against widely used colour standards such as FOGRA 51 or GRACoL. It measures and evaluates colour patches on proofs or press sheets, enabling additional refinements to help achieve the lowest possible Delta E (ΔE) rating, ensuring accurate colour reproduction across spot and process colours.

Then, once a press’ colour gamut has been thoroughly profiled, CERTIFIED can be used to regularly monitor colour stability over days, weeks, months, or even years, documenting and archiving these results to verify that, regardless of the solution used or throughout subsequent production runs, all colours are reproduced accurately, with certifiable evidence easily accessible to all stakeholders from cloud-based system. It can even organise this data into company-wide overviews, detailed reports, and trend analyses to clearly communicate the measurements.

CERTIFIED and Truepress LABEL Technology

By combining the Truepress LABEL 350UV SAI presses with CERTIFIED software, SCREEN and CGS ORIS enables the digital press to more quickly configure and subsequently certify that printed label’s colours meet industry standards, while providing clients with reliable documentation verifying colour consistency.

The technological synergy can also further boost productivity by ensuring picture perfect colours from label one, reducing the need for physical proofs and associated the shipping costs, while supporting sustainability goals by minimising wasted ink and substrates from additional rounds of test prints.

And, as all, test chart data can be accessed through the CGS ORIS’ web platform EVALUATE, full transparency of long-term colour results between distinct presses, printing methods, or production sites over extended periods can inform the deployment of additional EQUIOS/CGS ORIS colour management solutions to make necessary colour adjustments or corrections quickly.

These capabilities are especially promising for converters using digital and flexo or hybrid presses for the same label production runs, where colour consistency across analogue and digital printing processes is essential. In flexo printing, where colours are mixed and verified by operators manually, digital printing software capable of making accurate colour adjustments with minimal operator intervention to match small variances imperceptible to the human eye is an invaluable resource to speed up overall production efficiency.

SCREEN Europe Appoints Xavier Pereira as National Sales Manager for France https://www.screeneurope.com/news/screen-xavier-pereira-france/ Tue, 02 Sep 2025 06:00:21 +0000 https://www.screeneurope.com/?p=30518 Xavier Pereira as National Sales Manager for France at SCREEN Europe will work to strengthen the presence of inkjet printing in the French market with a new specialised team dedicated to expanding support, service, and growth.

Amstelveen, the Netherlands – SCREEN Europe is proud to share the appointment of Xavier Pereira as National Sales Manager for France, marking an important step forward in strengthening its commitment to the French digital printing market.

Xavier brings with him a unique mix of technical knowledge and commercial expertise. From his previous position managing sales operations across multiple departments in the automotive industry, his technical foundation, combined with hands-on business leadership, laid the groundwork for his entry into the printing industry as a printing equipment reseller.

Top-Quality Solutions and Mutual Respect

Xavier’s reputation supporting printing businesses’ growth, not only through equipment sales, but by offering practical solutions and strategic advice made him a perfect fit with SCREEN’s consultative sales approach and well-established position in the digital printing landscape.

“For every region, we strive to bring a comprehensive, ‘local-first’ sales and support strategy,” said, Bui Burke, SCREEN Europe Senior Vice President Sales, commenting on the necessary criteria when considering who to manage this vital market. “As such, we found in Xavier Pereira not only a skilled and experienced expert in the printing industry, but a native French speaker who will be based in the region, who can build strong personal and professional relationships that will help drive mutual success for us and all our digital printing equipment users.”

Supporting Growth in the French Market

For Xavier, SCREEN’s combination of advanced Japanese technology, efficient internal structure, and collaborative team culture made a strong first impression, and he steps into this role at a critical time. The French print market is evolving, with consolidation among printers and growing caution around major equipment investments.

“In this environment, customers need more than a vendor, they need a reliable long-term partner. And SCREEN as an international manufacturer that doesn’t just sell equipment, but designs, codes, builds, and supports everything they sell, in-house. That’s a level of reliability the French market is actively looking for right now. That level of vertical integration means customers get a product that’s they know will keep printing for many, many years.”

He sees strong potential for SCREEN in France, a mature market where digital inkjet technology is ideally positioned to modernise and future-proof print operations. His focus is on expanding SCREEN’s presence by deepening local partnerships and bringing advanced, reliable solutions to more businesses across the country. “My mission is to ensure printers in France know they have a committed partner in SCREEN, with expert local support, dependable technology, and a long-term vision for growth,” says Xavier

SCREEN Europe and DeCoSystem SRL Showcasing Turnkey Label Inspection Solution at Labelexpo 2025 https://www.screeneurope.com/news/screen-decosystem-labelexpo-2025/ Mon, 01 Sep 2025 11:44:04 +0000 https://www.screeneurope.com/?p=30344 From Labelexpo Europe 2025, SCREEN and DeCoSystem SRL will display how the Sentinel Platinum inspection system installed on the Truepress LABEL digital inkjet label presses is poised to drive label production efficiency and quality control.

Barcelona, Spain – SCREEN has partnered with DeCoSystem SRL to integrate their advanced Sentinel label inspection system with Truepress LABEL digital inkjet UV label presses. This collaboration promises to deliver real-time defect detection and data verification to further enhance the efficiency, quality, and consistency of SCREEN digital label printing.

This advanced solution will be publicly presented for the first time at Labelexpo Europe 2025, where visitors to the SCREEN booth in Hall 5, Stand 55 will be able to observe the Sentinel Platinum inspection system operating on the Truepress LABEL 350UV SAI S.

Precision Inspection Now for Digital Label Printing

DeCoSystem’s Sentinel range offers different inspection resolutions depending on the printing method and requested performance. For high-speed digital and hybrid digital/flexo systems, the Sentinel Platinum model delivers the highest level of performance utilising a contact image sensor (CIS) and a customised lamp to ensure high-resolution labels are accurately inspected without slowing printing speeds.

From an intuitive operator interface, the system detects a wide range of potential defects in real time, and while the Truepress LABEL 350UV SAI rarely has operational issues, this functionality can be invaluable for converters working with difficult substrates or finding operator errors. While converters working in sectors that require quality assurance and full traceability, it also provides high-resolution data verification by comparing scanned output directly against the original PDF files, checking data accuracy, barcode and QR code readability, and other variable data elements.

At the end of each production run, the Sentinel system then automatically generates detailed reports identifying the type and position of any defects, enabling complete quality documentation, corrective action, and subsequent workflow optimisation.

DeCoSystem Verification with Truepress LABEL Printing

The Sentinel Platinum system can be easily installed into Truepress LABEL 350UV SAI label presses with compact hardware and thorough, intuitive software integration enabling precise, high-resolution label defect and verification at full production speeds.

The system also functions in combination with SCREEN’s rewinder solution, allowing defects to be located, corrected, and verified without unnecessary substrate waste. Reports from the inspection system guide the rewinder to specific defects for efficient correction, further supporting sustainable production.

And by communicating between SCREEN’s EQUIOS workflow management software and MIS systems, Sentinel Platinum can analyse job definition files (JDF) to acquire job data, and, thanks to advanced artificial intelligence protocols, can automatically recognise the label design, quality tolerances, and dimensions, reducing false label rejections and setup times.

For label converters working with sensitive applications such as pharmaceutical and personal care, this new solution offers waste reduction through early detection and correction of defects (which also supports ongoing sustainability initiatives), fully verified data integrity invaluable for product certification, and the ability to provide end customers with documented proof of defect-free and data-verified production earlier in the production workflow. Together, these improvements enhance the already exceptional printing consistency of the Truepress LABEL 350UV SAI, streamlining overall production efficiency and profitability throughout the entire label converting workflow.

Label Inspection & Digital Printing Productivity at Labelexpo 2025

At Labelexpo Europe 2025, SCREEN‘s Truepress LABEL 350UV SAI S will be operating continuously throughout the show, highlighting this system’s reliable engineering that has resulted in its industry-leading press uptimes, now with every label produced inspected and verified by the Sentinel Platinum system. Visitors will see first-hand how the press maintains uninterrupted, high-quality production, and if any issues are detected, they can be immediately and decisively addressed.

DeCoSystem SRL will also showcase six additional inspection systems on its own booth in Hall 3, Stand G25, and six more integrated with various printing equipment providers throughout the exhibition, demonstrating how their collaborations are driving label printing technological advancement and customer value.

“We’re seeing how converter’s clients are increasingly expecting more assurances and verification that they receive their labels exactly as expected,” said Carlo Sammarco, Business Development Director Label & Packaging Solutions at SCREEN Europe. “By combining the reliability of SCREEN’s Truepress LABEL technology with the precision of DeCoSystem’s inspection systems, we can deliver a workflow that simultaneously gives clients the assurance their labels are defect free, while enhancing the converters productivity, quality, and customer confidence.”
